Can patient advocacy be abused? #nurse #asktheNP |The Change of Shift Podcast recap Ep 10

This was another ad lib spontaneous extra episode. I have a tendency to have ADOBSO, sorry gang (hat tip to my co-host for the acronym). These spontaneous mini-Podcasts will always be shorter.

I posted another one of my #asktheNP updates on Twitter:

It garnered quite the interest with a little bit of controversy. Through this conversation I learned the following:

  • some physicians feel our profession thinks the term ‘advocacy’ is exclusive to Nursing
  • advocacy is not an excuse to behave poorly
  • unfortunately there are still lines being drawn in the sand between Nurses and Physicians

It was an educational dialogue with a handful of Nurses and Physicians. It went from members taking a defensive stance to finding a common goal with patient care.

At the end of the day we are here for our patients. We all have a role to play. Advocacy is an integral part of our shared governance. A team is only as good as its individual members and I was elated to see that even exists among complete strangers on Twitter.

This Podcast episode was my view on that conversation and to simply emphasize this take home message:

It’s all about our patients.

Until next time, remember to always check your own pulse first!
